How Does UV Water Purification Work?

From domestic use to commercial food production and preparation, having access to clean drinking water is vital. Potable water is essential to keep one hydrated, as well as protected from waterborne illnesses and infections.
In Singapore, governing authorities like the National Environment Agency (NEA) and Public Utilities Board (PUB) ensure that the country’s water supply is of the highest quality and suitable for drinking. Similarly, hotels and restaurants are required to comply with public health and safety standards, and this includes having and providing access to clean water.
For both personal and commercial use, water purifier and filtration systems are available to provide added protection to one’s water supply.
One technology being used today to clean and disinfect water is ultraviolet (UV) purification. This process uses germicidal UV light to eliminate harmful microorganisms that may be present in the water and prevent their further replication. UV light is effective against a wide range of bacteria, viruses and parasites that can cause digestive diseases such as cholera, E. coli and hepatitis. In this regard, a UV water purifier is effective in preventing microbial contamination of water.
A UV water purifier is equipped with lamps that release a regulated dosage of UV radiation to break down cells and DNA of microbial contaminants, preventing them from reproducing. The water is pumped into the lamp-equipped chamber, purified and flows directly out of the point-of-entry or point-of-use outlet, ensuring that no water is wasted.
Unlike chemical purifiers, UV water purifiers do not add chemicals to the water, which can leave chemical byproducts like odor or taste. However, UV purifiers are not equipped to remove contaminants such as chlorine, heavy metals (mercury and lead) and volatile organic compounds (VOC). They also are not able to filter bad taste or odour from the water, which is why UV purifiers are often used alongside reverse osmosis systems for complete purification.
Regarding maintenance, UV water purifiers require lamp replacements every year. Your supplier should be more than happy to arrange regular servicing to keep it running in tip-top condition.

GFS Innovation is pleased to carry the industry-leading Firewall™ UVC from Waterlogic – a step ahead of traditional UVC in more ways than one.
- It purifies all the way through to the nozzle, where the water is dispensed from.
- It obliterates germs right before the water reaches your glass, and also acts as a barrier to protect the nozzle; both of which has the effect of stopping bacteria and viruses from entering the system and preventing the risk of cross-contamination between users.
- Its double helix spiral allows water to flow from the top to the bottom and back, exposing the water to UVC radiation for a longer duration than conventional UV solutions.
- Its mirrored housing amplifies the strength of the light for thorough germicidal action up to the point of delivery.
GFS Innovation supplies numerous types of office and home water dispensers that come built in with advanced UV purifiers and carbon water filters, that, among others, help to provide safe and clean drinking water 24/7.
