Is Boiled Water the Same as Filtered Water

In Singapore, we’re fortunate to have relatively clean water to consume straight off the tap. However, depending on the age of the pipes or building, or for people who simply do not wish to take the risk, they may prefer to take it a step further to either boil or filter their water before consumption.

So, what – if any – is the difference between boiled and filtered water? Are they the same, and is one better than the other?

Boiled Water

Boiling water is a long-held practice in order to kill or inactivate microbiological contaminants like bacteria and viruses, and other pathogens. It is also a highly affordable and accessible option (requiring just a pot or kettle).

However, boiling water does not kill all bacteria or remove any chemicals present; nor does it remove pollutants like dirt, debris or soil particles. It also does not remove bad taste or odour from the water. Boiling water for consumption will also require some waiting time for the water to cool down first.

Filtered Water

Filtered water refers to water that was treated using a water filter system. Basically, water passes through different types of filter media that grabs onto specific contaminants, preventing it from entering the water we will eventually drink. Water filters in Singapore can remove more contaminants such as lead, chlorine, microplastics and pesticides; as well as remove bad odours and tastes from water. Filtered water is also incredibly convenient, being installed directly onto water supply outlets, giving you continuous, instant and clean water.

While filtered water is in many ways cleaner and more convenient, a water filtration system also tends to be pricier and more complex than simply boiling tap water. However, the long-term health benefits and convenience, coupled with an experienced servicing team to keep your equipment in tip-top shape, can make it all worth it.

Boiled Water or Filtered Water?

Deciding between boiled water and filtered water boils ultimately comes down to the user’s priorities. Generally, filtered water is preferred by individuals and organizations due to its convenience and health benefits.

Restaurateurs, café owners and hotel managers also often favour a well-functioning water filtration system to facilitate seamless food and drinks preparation that adhere to high safety standards.

Water filters can also protect coffee machines, kettles and boilers by removing hard-scale residue that cannot be filtered by boiling alone. This means that the quality and maintenance costs of these kitchen equipment can also be better protected.

At GFS Innovation, we are committed to providing a wide variety of reliable water filter systems suitable for all residential and commercial use.
